Akiko Shimamura, MD, PhD
Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School;
Samuel E. Lux IV Chair in Hematology Oncology;
Director, Bone Marrow Failure and MDS Program, Dana Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders CenterDr. Shimamura directs the Bone Marrow Failure and Myelodysplastic Syndrome Program at Dana Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. Her research focuses on translational studies, spanning clinical through basic science investigations to understand the genetic and molecular basis of bone marrow failure, MDS, and leukemia predisposition with the goal of developing more effective and less toxic treatments.

Chad Harris, BS, MS
LAB MANAGER
Chad received his BS then MS in Biology/Genetics and Molecular Biology respectively from Ball State University. He then started working in the Lab of David A. Williams MD, where he continues to manage. He is currently the chair of the Laboratory Safety Group (LSG) of the hospital, and is a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee as well as the Gene and cell therapy scientific review committee. He is coming to the Shimamura lab to fill a management/technical training role.

Alyssa Kennedy, MD, PhD
INSTRUCTOR IN PEDIATRICS
Alyssa received her BS degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from Haverford College and her MD and PhD at Drexel University College of Medicine and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Her pediatrics residency was in the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston University and Harvard Medical School. She is currently an attending physician at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, and an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Yu Zhou, PhD
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW
Yu got his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Tulane University. He focused on transcriptomic and epigenetic analyses using bioinformatic tools during his PhD period. He joined the Shimamura Lab in December 2019. Yu loves road trips on vacation.

Maggie Malsch, RN, BSN
CLINICAL RESEARCH MANAGER
Maggie is the Clinical Research Manager for the Bone Marrow Failure program at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her initial work with Dr. Shimamura was in the lab, where she worked on SDS. Maggie then went back to school to get her nursing degree from Simmons College and her Masters in Clinical Trials from Drexel University. She worked as a bone marrow transplant nurse at Boston Children’s and eventually moved into the role of research nurse and project manager. When Dr. Shimamura returned to Boston Children’s, Maggie jumped at the chance to work with her again.

Greta Joos, BS
CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Greta is a Clinical Research Assistant at Boston Children's. She joined the team in May 2021 after graduating from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She works on the SDS Registry as well as on a variety of other bone marrow failure projects. Greta enjoys connecting with patients and families. Leah Cheng
CLINICAL RESEARCH MANAGER
Leah is a Clinical Research Manager with the Experimental Therapeutics and Interventional Trials group at Boston Children’s Hospital. Starting in 2017, she began working with Dr. Shimamura coordinating the SDS Registry and since then has also become involved in other bone marrow failure registries and interventional trials as well. Leah very much enjoys working with both the SDS Registry patients and the research team.

Ian Atkinson
CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Ian is a graduate of Cornell University where he obtained a BA in Biology and Society. As a clinical research assistant, he works collaboratively with medical providers and research staff on two international registries investigating bone marrow failure. He is passionate about promoting health equity, pediatric research, improving patient treatment/outcomes, and advocating for mental health initiatives.

Katherine Coyne
INTERN
Katherine is a current candidate for a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry at Northeastern University. She is working in the Shimamura Lab as a student for her co-op starting in January 2022. In the past, she has worked in cancer immunology research and on an inpatient oncology floor as a medical assistant. In her spare time, she loves to run, read, try new foods, and spend time with family and friends.
